Textile collections help charity

Spelthorne Council makes donation to CREST Cancer Support and Home Start Spelthorne

Each year Spelthorne Borough Council donates a proportion of the money raised from the textiles collection service to charity. The two charities chosen for this year were, CREST Cancer Support and Home Start Spelthorne. They will each receive a cheque for £400.

To nominate a charity for 2019, we held a poll on our website from June until September. Residents were asked to vote for one of three charities. Thanks to all those who nominated, the charity chosen is Princess Alice Hospice.

Cllr Daxa Patel, Cabinet Member for Environment and Compliance, said: "I hope that our donation to charity will encourage residents to recycle their textiles rather than throw them away in the rubbish bin."

Textile collections are every week, at the same time as food waste and small electricals. Simply put textiles in tied, clear plastic bags next to the food waste caddy on collection day. Collection dates can be found by entering your postcode into My Spelthorne, www.spelthorne.gov.uk/home.

We will have details on our website next June for those who wish to nominate a charity for 2020. For information about textiles collections, visit www.spelthorne.gov.uk/textiles
