What is an independent visitor?

A volunteer who visits, befriends and advises children in care who are looked after by Surrey County Council and live in foster care or residential homes.

Who needs an independent visitor?

Children and young people usually aged between 10 and 17 who do not have regular contact with a family member or where they would benefit from a regular visitor. Children are from all cultures and backgrounds.

What happens on a visit?

Anything that you both enjoy, from window shopping and fast food to dog walking, ice skating or rock climbing.

You get

  • enjoyment of giving your time to a child
  • immense personal satisfaction
  • initial and ongoing training
  • support and back up
  • reimbursement of agreed expenses

You give

  • one day per month, usually at weekends
  • a commitment to visit for at least two years
  • your energy and time to a young person
  • participation in independent visitor support groups and training
  •  your agreement to an enhanced criminal bureau check (DBS), reference and health check
